What Is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which a tooth is removed from the mouth. The extracted tooth may be whole, or it may be broken into pieces. Extractions are performed for various reasons, including tooth decay, gum disease, trauma, and orthodontic treatments. A child’s baby teeth are sometimes extracted to make room for permanent teeth if they haven’t fallen out in time.

Impacted tooth extractions are a procedure in which a tooth that has not erupted through the gum line is removed. Impacted teeth are usually wisdom teeth, but they can also be other types of teeth.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with the dentist. During this consultation, you and your dentist will discuss your medical history and the reasons for the extraction.

The first step is numbing the area around the tooth and gum tissue with a local anesthetic. This will ensure that you feel no pain during the extraction. Additional sedation methods can be discussed if you think they may be necessary.

Once the area is numb, the dentist will use a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth from the tooth socket. The next step is to remove the tooth with forceps. Sometimes, the tooth may need to be broken into pieces before removing it.

After removing the tooth, a blood clot will form in the empty socket. The dentist will place a gauze pad over the socket and have you bite down on it to help stop the bleeding. In some cases, the dentist may place a stitch (suture) to help close the opening.

Risks Associated With Teeth Extractions

As with any surgical procedure, tooth extractions have some risks. These include:

  • Bleeding: You may experience some bleeding after the extraction. This is normal and will eventually stop.
Swelling: Some swelling is also to be expected after an extraction. To help reduce swelling, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your mouth for the first 24 hours.
  • Swelling: Some swelling is also to be expected after an extraction. To help reduce swelling, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your mouth for the first 24 hours.
  • Pain: You may experience some pain and discomfort after the procedure. This is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Talk to your dentist immediately if you experience severe pain after 2-3 days.
  • Infection: There is a small risk of infection after tooth extraction. This can usually be avoided by practicing good oral hygiene and taking antibiotics as prescribed.
  • Dry socket: This condition can occur when the blood clot that forms in the empty socket is dislodged. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and bad breath.
  • Nerve Injury: In rare cases, the nerve that runs through the jawbone can be injured during an extraction. This can cause numbness or tingling in the lips, chin, or tongue.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

It’s important to take good care of your mouth after extraction to ensure proper healing. Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to care for your mouth.

Some things you should keep in mind are:

  • Avoid rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours. After that, you may rinse with warm water and salt. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water and rinse around the extraction site to help clean and aid in healing.
  • Avoid drinking hot liquids.
  • Avoid using a straw for the first 3 days to prevent dry socket.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 48 hours.
  • Brush your teeth gently and avoid the extraction site for the first few days.
  • Eat soft foods for the first few days. Examples include soup, pudding, eggs, and mashed potatoes. Gradually add other foods back into your diet as you feel comfortable.
  • Swelling and bruising are common after an extraction. To help reduce swelling, apply a cold compress to your face for the first few days for 20 minutes at a time. You can also take over-the-counter pain medication if you’re experiencing discomfort. (Note: Always take medication according to prescribed instructions).+
