What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge (fixed partial denture) is a type of dental restoration and a great way to replace missing teeth and restore your smile. The bridge essentially “bridges” the gap created by your missing tooth or teeth. It’s made up of two dental crowns that sit on either side of the gap (known as abutment teeth) with a false tooth or teeth in between (pontic) The pontic can be made from different materials, including gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.

Why Get a Dental Bridge

There are many reasons why you might want to get a dental bridge. Here are just a few:

  • To restore your smile and confidence
  • To make it easier to eat and speak properly
  • To prevent your adjacent teeth from moving out of place
  • To support a dental appliance such as a denture

Types of Bridges

There are four main types of dental bridges:

  • Traditional Bridge (fixed bridge): This is the most common type. It is made up of two dental crowns placed on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, with a false tooth (or teeth) in between.
  • Cantilever Bridge: This type of bridge is used when there is only one natural tooth next to the gap. It consists of a false tooth (or teeth) attached to the one natural tooth.
  • Maryland Bridge (resin-bonded bridge): This type of bridge is made up of a metal framework bonded to the back of the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap. The false tooth (or teeth) is then attached to this metal framework. This bridge is typically used to replace a single tooth.
  • Implant Supported Bridge: This type of bridge is supported by one or more dental implants instead of natural teeth. This is a great option if you are missing multiple teeth in a row.

The Bridge Process

During your initial consultation, we will assess your individual needs and develop a treatment plan that is right for you. If we determine that a dental bridge is the best option, we will take impressions of your teeth and send them off to our lab.

The abutment teeth are also prepared on the first visit by shaving down a small portion of enamel to make room for the crowns. The dental lab will create your custom dental bridge, which usually takes about two weeks. You will be fitted with a temporary bridge until your permanent bridge is ready.

Once your bridge is ready, you will return for a second appointment. During this appointment, we will ensure the bridge fits properly and then cement it in place. You will then be able to leave our office with a brand new smile!

You may need to come back for additional visits to check on the fit and bite of your new bridge, but otherwise, you can expect it to last for many years with proper care.

How To Care for Your Dental Bridge

Just like your natural teeth, it is important to maintain good oral health. It’s important to brush and floss your bridge every day. This will help to prevent decay, and gum disease, which can lead to additional tooth loss. You may find that it takes a little time to get used to flossing around your dental bridge, but with a bit of practice, it will become second nature. It is also important to visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
